| The below note is from last year... but we have a MayDay Celebration coming up next Tuesday, May 1, 2006 | |||

As your dutiful COPE vp, I pass along this information pertinent to May 1st, which--for the rest of the world-- is May Day, the day celebrating work and working people. As many of you know, since Congress passed the Taft-Hartley Act nearly 60 years ago the national government has gradually eroded the ability of working Americans to form the organizations that enable them to negotiate for wages, benefits, and working conditions. The posting below is to give information, to those interested, about how we--as union members--can find out about the Employee Free Choice Act. Have a great May Day (keeping in mind it is a vacation day for working people worldwide). Mike Morrow mmorrow@pcc.edu VP for COPE PCCFF RESTORING WORKERS' FREEDOM TO FORM UNIONS Some 57 million U.S. workers say they would join a union if they could. But when workers try to gain a union voice on the job, employers respond with intimidation, harassment and retaliation. And our labor laws are too weak to stop them. The Employee Free Choice Act would ensure that when a majority of employees in a workplace decide to form a union, they can do so without the debilitating obstacles employers now use to block their free choice. Specifically, the Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 1696 and S. 842) would strengthen protections for workers' freedom to form unions by requiring employers to recognize a union once a majority of workers signed cards authorizing union representation. It also would provide for mediation and arbitration of first-contract disputes and authorize stronger penalties for employers that violate the legal rights of workers seeking to form unions or negotiate first contracts. You might want to contact your U.S. senators and representative to ask them their position on the Employee Free Choice Act. If you'd like to contact your Congressional representative(s) concerning this legislation--on your own time, of course--a useful website is: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/ |
