During the second half of the program: We talk about EQUITY and Justice!
Unions are organizing service workers at an unprecedented rate. While many traditional blue collar jobs are gone, a new class of labor deserves a voice in the workplace and a vote on our national agenda. More and more of these service workers are "part-timers." This arrangement is a boon for businesses and institutions, but it can be unfair, inequitable, unjust and ill-advised. Unions are vital resources for American workers. We must speak truth to power. Our solidarity will allow us to endure, survive, and prevail. According to Brooke:
"Part-time and contingent workers make up more than half of the
faculty at most community colleges and universities across the
nation. Portland is no exception. This fact contributes to working
conditions that seriously compromise the learning climate on the
campus. At a time when the need for higher education is greater
than ever, and students pay ever higher tuition and fees, teachers
are being paid less each year in relation to the cost of living.
Many part-time instructors have no health insurance or retirement,
and lack job security. At the same time they are expected to teach
larger and larger classes and often are forced to juggle two or
three jobs to make ends meet. What is to be done?" -Brooke Jacobson, Ph.D
