“YES, WE CAN”: LABOR HISTORY FROM THE AGE OF ROOSEVELT TO THE AGE OF OBAMA (1929-2009)

How does our labor history inform our current strategies?

Diffi cult times have led to creative solutions.

This course covers the history of US trade unionism

from the Great Depression to the present day.

CONTRACT CAMPAIGNS

Successful negotiations require developing a strategic

action plan that integrates membership involvement

and community activism with activity at the

bargaining table. This how-to class helps unions

develop a comprehensive contract campaign.

BASIC UNIONISM

This class is for the newly active union member

who wants a broad overview of how the labor

movement works. It provides an introduction

to labor law, collective bargaining, workplace

dispute resolution and the role of labor in the

political process.

CAPACITACIÓN PARA LÍDERES (LEADERSHIP SKILLS)

A course covering basic union leadership skills

for Spanish speaking unionists. We will focus on

team building, communication styles and principles

of leadership. Activities will include case

analysis and group discussion. Offered in Spanish.

SCHEDULE 1

LABOR LAW TRACK—”THE GOOD NEWS ON LABOR LAW”

Developments on the state and federal levels have led

to some changes in labor law and the potential for signifi

cant reforms. These workshops deal with different

aspects of worker rights.

1A: Organizing & the Law: Card Check, EFCA & Beyond

An update on the current status of EFCA, with a strategic

analysis of how card check recognition works

in different jurisdictions.

1B: Federal Labor Law

Changes in Federal Labor Law including the Civil

Rights Act, the ADA, and the FMLA.

1C: What’s Happening in State Labor Law?

An update on Oregon’s worker rights oriented statutes,

with an emphasis on changes made in the 2009

Legislative Session.


SCHEDULE 2

COMMUNICATIONS TRACK

Effective communication is at the heart of union activism.

These three workshops explore different aspects of how

we get our message out to members and the public.

2A: Hello! Can You Hear Me Now?!

Explores ways to get your message to members, allies

and the public, and know that you have actually been heard.

2B: Effective Persuasion Techniques

Provides hands-on opportunities for participants to

use communication techniques in addressing typical

union and workplace issues. Includes short videotaped

presentations.

2C: E-Communications: New Ways to Reach Out

How do we match a particular message with one of

the new electronic technologies that permeate our

lives (email, blogs, twitters, webcasts, texting)? This

workshop emphasizes how to get the results you want

from these E-communications tools, not learning the

mechanics of how to use the technology
