War protesters march through downtown Portland, Oregon
By Susan Goldsmith,
Oregonian
Some of the protestors, like Mona Warner, were there because they opposed all wars, while others said they were there because they objected to the Iraq war. "I'm certainly opposed to terrorism, and I don't think we're making the world safer by being in Iraq," said Janet Dietz, a PDX Peace Coalition volunteer who manned a booth at the end of the parade route distributing anti-war literature. "I'm here because the cost of the war is terrible in human costs, moral costs and dollars." Dietz gave out flyers that put the cost of Iraq war to Oregon taxpayers at $3.7 billion through 2007. War veterans also turned out to object to the war and hand out materials. Chris Knight, a volunteer with Veterans for Peace who served in the Navy from 1975 to 1996, handed out copies of the U.S. Constitution at his group's table. "We want to keep our country from using war as an instrument of international policy," Knight said. As of last week, at least 3,799 members of the U.S. military died in Iraq since the war began in March of 2003, according to the Associated Press. Another 28,009 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, the AP reported. Even as he marched in the rally, high school teacher Art Shapiro doubted whether the protest would have any impact on the war. Nevertheless, he wore a sign hanging from his neck that said "Had Enough" and vowed to continue protesting at every opportunity. "I don't know how much it will help," he said of the demonstration. "But I want to make sure my voice is heard." -- Susan Goldsmith susangoldsmith@news.oregonian.com |
