There are several issues in play here: religion, party, abortion,
the efficacy of reverence for life, individual freedom vs the common
good, stereotypes, logic, etc...  but let me tiptoe through this
socio-political minefield…  ;-)

Abortion is one of those issues where most everyone agrees.
In a perfect world, abortion would never become necessary.
Life is precious.

But we do not live in a perfect world.  The most ardent foes of
abortion, those who would refuse to allow a woman who  was raped to
have an abortion... usually have an agenda.  It is
most often a religious agenda.  It might also also be a more disturbing
and perhaps dangerous personal obsession.

But it would be disingenuous to castigate all Catholic Christians as
lemmings who are wont to walk off this cliff.  MOST Catholics do not
subscribe to the Pope's dictates on either abortion or the exclusion of
women from positions of power in the church.

(REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS - CATHOLIC Polls show that four out
of five Catholics disagree with the official ... the areas of women's
status, birth control and abortion, I needed to learn more. ...
www.newint.org/issue303/catholic.html)

Most people, "religious" or secular, believe that abortion should be a
last resort, rather than a first choice.  But for various authorities
in a patriarchal social order to deny women the right to make decisions
about their own health and well-being is wrong.

Yet we have found, empirically, that the assumption that one's
religious preference will necessarily determine how a politician
may or may not behave in office is also wrong...

As for whether Republicans are inherently anti-choice, this would seem
to be another overly-broad generalization.

(POLITICS: THE PLATFORM;Most Republicans Are Uneasy About Abortion
Plank, Poll Says  By JAMES BENNET
By more than 2 to 1, Republicans believe their party's platform should
not specifically support a constitutional amendment banning abortion,
according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

We can find common ground among men, women, parties, and religions.
And we must find that rare and nearly intangible promised land... if we
hope to build the bigger tent which will be required if we hope to take
back this nation for our people.
