Wednesday is a big day in the Faculty Federation's effort to secure more equitable treatment of
part-time faculty and create more full-time faculty positions here in Oregon. Through AFT-Oregon, we have introduced HB2578, legislation that attempts to improve the situation in various ways.

In the months leading up to the massive nationwide Mayday rallies on
immigration many of us in the labor movement have asked ourselves...
-Are the current struggles of immigrants relevant to us?
-What are the causes of immigration?
-How do we discuss these controversial issues as they come up in our unions
and at work?
It is time for us to get together and talk. Join us for dinner, an
informative panel discussion and conversation on immigration issues that
concern all workers.

National Student Labor Week of Action
This month, students and workers will hit the streets for the Seventh
Annual National Student Labor Week of Action. From March 27
through April 4, Jobs with Justice’s
Student Labor Action Project will commemorate the lives of Cesar Chavez
and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by highlighting the plight of workers
nationwide.
During the week, students and workers will demand living wages,
university codes of conduct that support worker’s rights, an end to
union-busting tactics and the freedom to form unions and bargain
collectively for all workers. To find an event in your area and
learn more about the Student Labor Week of Action, go to Jobs with
Justice’s website at
http://www.jwj.org.

On October 1, the Shoot First Law went into effect in
Florida: The law grants sweeping criminal and civil immunity to anyone
who pulls the trigger when they feel 'threatened' -- and specifically denies
legal recourse to innocent bystanders killed or wounded in the crossfire,
even if the shooter acted negligently.
Tell Governor Kulongoski that "Shoot First" is a horrible
policy idea for Oregon.
"Torture
undermines the moral and legal principles on which society is based. Moral
authority and the ability to pressure allies are lost when world leaders
resort to torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading practices."
Some Representatives
are reportedly trying to strip the anti-torture amendment. Please
send an email and call your Representative today to urge them to
keep the Anti-Torture Amendment exactly as passed by the Senate, and
to support the fundamental right to due process by opposing the
Graham Amendment!

The White House is vigorously opposing
the bi-partisan McCain anti-torture language in the Defense
Appropriations Bill. Vice President Cheney is lobbying to exempt the CIA
from the language that would prohibit torture and inhumane treatment of
prisoners. CALL your Senators and Representative today to urge them to
include the McCain language WITHOUT exceptions.

As Congress returns from Thanksgiving break, many representatives are
examining and changing their position on Iraq. They've seen the polls
showing that most of America wants our troops home1, and they've
read the articles with military and foreign policy experts saying a
responsible exit makes sense. Today, every one of them needs to hear a
steady, day-long avalanche of phone calls to
get out of
Iraq.

1,000th Execution in the United States
Robin Lovitt is scheduled to be executed in Virginia on November 30,
which would mark the gruesome milestone of the 1,000th execution in the
United States since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Amnesty
International is concerned that most of the small amount of DNA evidence
presented at trial linking Lovitt to the crime was illegally destroyed
by a court clerk to free up space in court storage rooms, before Lovitt
could appeal against his conviction.
Take Action!
Urge Governor Warner to make a difference by granting clemency to Robin
Lovitt. » ACT NOW
