This week, the Senate will hold its first up-or-down vote on ending the war in Iraq. Tell your Senators to support the Feingold-Reid legislation.
Restore Habeas Corpus!
In the House, the leadership is deciding whether or not to support legislation that will restore habeas corpus. Tell Speaker Pelosi to allow this amendment to go through.
This week,
the Senate
will finally
have its
first
up-or-down
vote on
ending the
occupation
of Iraq.
Senators
Feingold and
Reid have
introduced
legislation
that will
effectively
end the
occupation
and require
the
President to
start
bringing
U.S. troops
home from
Iraq within
120 days.
A very
substantial
portion of
the House of
Representatives
voted last
week to
immediately
end the
occupation.
A vast
majority of
Americans
now realize
that a
military
"victory" is
no longer
possible in
Iraq, and
that our
troops are
caught in
the middle
of a civil
war.
Courageous
members of
Congress are
now trying
to restore
the
fundamental
right of
habeas
corpus
through an
amendment to
the defense
authorization
bill.
However, the
amendment
must first
pass through
the House
Rules
Committee,
and support
from the
leadership
is critical
to get
through that
committee.
Habeas
corpus is a
fundamental
legal right
common to
all modern
judicial
systems,
which
requires
independent
judicial
review of
charges
brought by
the
executive
branch. This
right
protects
against the
arbitrary
practices of
kings,
despots and
dictators in
imprisoning
people on a
whim.
Without
habeas
corpus, it's
a
very
slippery
slope
towards
dictatorship.
So
to ask
Speaker
Pelosi to
allow the
habeas
amendment to
proceed;
we'll send a
copy of your
letter to
your
representative
as well.
Please share
this message
with anyone
you know who
cares about
ending the
occupation
of Iraq or
restoring
habeas
corpus.
