Faculty Tutor Job Description

Position Description

The primary responsibility of the Faculty Tutor is to provide individual and/or small group tutoring sessions in our tutoring centers. Tutors facilitate learning as guides or coaches in order to assist students in becoming successful, independent learners. The purpose of tutoring is to increase and enhance mastery of concepts or applications of a specific course of study for students seeking academic assistance. Tutors integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress. Faculty Tutors also act as mentors for Peer Tutors and work to increase Peer Tutors’ understanding of the tutoring/learning process. In addition, Faculty Tutors may actively participate in the development and delivery of Peer Tutor training. Faculty Tutors will refer students to the appropriate college resources which may be required..

Responsibilities

Tutor students in specific course material and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.

Participate in professional development activities or exercises to improve tutorial skills.

Participate in formal tutor-training seminars, complete ten hours of CRLA tutor training,
or provide documentation of professional experience or expertise.    

Attend supervision, observation and evaluation sessions if requested.

Mentor Peer tutors.

Complete and submit required timesheets in a timely fashion.

Make and document appropriate referrals to other campus resources.

Assist students with the use of tutorial technology.

Assist in the overall promotion of the tutoring center.

Other duties as appropriate.

Position Requirements

Demonstrated ability to establish rapport and communicate well with students.

Ability and willingness to mentor Peer Tutors.

Successful completion of an undergraduate or graduate degree as appropriate.

Demonstrated knowledge of the material to be tutored.

Preference will be given to Faculty Tutors with the ability to tutor multiple disciplines.
