"America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense, it is the other way around. Human rights invented America."  James Earl Carter

Support the UN Human Rights Council

Amnesty International believes that the adoption of the draft resolution is a first and crucial step to create a stronger and more authoritative body than the Commission on Human Rights.

The creation of the new UN Human Rights Council has reached the final stage. After months of intense negotiation, the UN has come up with a compromise text. All of countries except the United States have accepted this draft. The United States is opposing this draft and is threatening to call for a vote, which will effectively kill the new UN Human Rights Council.

ACT NOW
Please contact Secretary Rice TODAY and urge her to support the current draft.

The existing Commission on Human Rights has not been able to address widespread or serious human rights violations in many countries. The Human Rights Council, as proposed in the draft resolution now before the General Assembly, would be better equipped to address both urgent and long-running human rights situations, whenever they occur.
