Homelessness Awareness Week
Hello Service-Learners,

This event at Reed next week may be of interest to some of you...

Begin forwarded message:

Homelessness Awareness Week
is being presented by the Reed College
Community Service program, SEEDS, during the week of February 13th
through the 19th. This free week-long event will engage the
community with the issue of homelessness, particularly in Portland.
This week will offer opportunities for education, discussion and
action on the day-to-day experiences of Portlands homeless people,
the phenomenons underlying causes and best-practice solutions.

We are delighted to host the Sisters of the Road Cafés PhotoVoice
project, which will be open in the Vollum lounge 2/13 to 2/17 from
9 am to 5 pm. To kick off the exhibit there will be a reception and
presentation with food and drinks on Monday, February 13th from 6
to 8 pm in the Vollum Lounge. The exhibit features photos taken by
those in our community who have first-hand experience of the
homeless and poverty. This is event is co-sponsored by SEEDS, the
Multicultural Resource Center and the Student Activities Offices.

On Wednesday, February 15th, there will be a panel discussion of
the issue of homelessness from 4:30 to 6 pm in Psych 105. Rob
Justus, director of JOIN; Keith Vann, the first person on
Portlands Citizens Commission on Homelessness to have experienced
homelessness; Dani Leis, the volunteer coordinator for Outside-In;
Wendy Kohn, the president of Kwamba Productions; and Timothy
McCarthy, the resident and education coordinator of Dignity Village
will discuss their perspectives, experiences and take questions.

Join Wendy Kohn after the panel discussion to hear about Kwambas
Toolkit project , whose goal is to help other communities set up
Dignity Village-style camps, and view a preview of the documentary
film about Dignity Village.

The above events are free and open to the public. The week will
also include a lunch-time discussion and a service trip to Dignity
Village for Reed students.

"The spread of evil is the symptom of a vacuum. whenever evil wins,
it is only by default: by the moral failure of those who evade the fact
that there can be no compromise on basic principles."
