A Primer on Immigration
There are critical messages America needs, not only about Iraq.
“If the American people heard these stories..."
The controversy over immigration is more complex than
jingoistic talking points would have us believe.
There are serious questions we must consider to find solutions.

1.  What are the laws?
2.  What about ethics?
3.  Are we a nation of immigrants?
4.  Where do we go from here?

"
Reform of our immigration laws will ultimately have to take into account
this reality: there are more jobs available for immigrants than there are
legal visas available to immigrant workers, and there are not enough
family visas to reunify families in a timely manner.  In recent years, new immigration laws, and actions by the executive branch, have been moving this country away from our tradition of treating everyone fairly under the law."

Once we had open borders, now immigration law is complex
and contradictory.  We must not settle for simple answers,
tit-for-tat sophism,  pat replies, or shallow disdain.  We can work
together to seek justice.
NAFTA needs reform.  Our immigration
quotas need examination.  And we must insist that responsible
American companies observe the law.
As for the extralegal immigrants who now reside in America,
we should provide a process for them to come out of the closet
and make their residency legitimate.  They will have to pay some
dues, but their "crime" is less ignoble than crimes committed by
the savvy CEO's who exploited their helplessness.
There is a desperate need for sound immigration policy.
It must consider families, rather than ignoring family ties.  Instead
of demonizing those who march for justice, we should recognize
that justice has been denied for too long.  We cannot allow concerns
about border security to define us, nor should we allow corporate
labor needs to negate constitutional rights and civil law.
