Clearly the behavior of many European settlers was abominable.
And much of the retaliation against this behavior was depraved
and brutal. These ethical concerns are stark and inarguable.
This land did not belong to the European interlopers, and it was their
behavior and invasion which precipitated the violence. Selah...
These bad behaviors took place in another time, another zeitgeist...
It does not serve us well to indulge in either guilt
for the crimes of our ancestors or self-pity for the atrocities which
were committed. What this history does provide, however, is a warning
and an admonition for what we can do today.
Since those dark days, our nation has come to represent a beacon of
freedom in what can be a forbidding and treacherous world. Many have
fought and died to protect that vision. All of us in America have
become one people, regardless of who our ancestors may have been or
under what circumstances they came to find themselves in this nation.
What has allowed us to survive, endure, and prevail... more often than
not, has been our values. These transcend language and ethnicity, and
have everything to do with common decency and human dignity.
Perhaps there may be some redemption or absolution found in our
value-driven commitments and behaviors. Or not. But what we can do
today, regardless of our history, is behave in a manner which
recognizes that ethics are not situational and ethical behavior cannot
be redefined for the sake of convenience.
This remains one nation, and can remain indivisible, if we keep our
eyes on the prize of liberty and justice. It does not serve the cause
of liberty to build walls and close our doors and minds. It does not
serve the purposes of justice to define millions as "illegal," when in
fact there may be some flaws in various laws and directives, or
circumstances which transcend this definition.
We must not settle for simple answers, tit-for-tat sophism,
pat replies, or shallow disdain. We can work together, as a people to
seek justice. This is our heritage and what we hope
will be our legacy. As for our differences, these too shall pass.
In the meanwhile... we must have courage, faith, and integrity.
These things matter, regardless of the situation. If we abandon our
principles for "security" or cast out our neighbors because of a
thoughtless and vocal few, we have forfeited something precious
and vital. Let us not surrender to fear. It is better that the sun
also rise on a common ground of cooperation and reconciliation, than to
have our hopes and dreams lost in a desperate incivility.
