PCC Community: Greetings from the Office of International Education. Please join me in celebrating the Fifth Annual International Education Week (IEW), November 13 – 16, 2007. The week will be a celebration of the PCC international students, faculty, and staff living in this global community. International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. It intends to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. The program brochure for this exciting week is already available in your department district wide. If you haven’t received your copy, please go to www.pcc.edu/international and click on the PDF document under International Education Week. The International Education Week’s events will include various workshops for faculty and staff from the returning participants of the CIEE Faculty Development Seminars worldwide and Instituto Cultural Oaxaca in Mexico. For students, there will be the International Fashion Show & Showcase at Sylvania (Upper CC Mall) on Tuesday, November 13 and Thursday, November 15 respectively, the International Showcase & Talent Show at Rock Creek (Bldg.3 – Mall and Forum areas) as well as the Multicultural Center Open House (Bldg.3/128b) on Tuesday, November 13, and the International Extravaganza at Cascade (Cafeteria) on Wednesday, November 14. The event-filled week will also include Chanrithy Him at Sylvania on Thursday, November 15, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., in the Little Theatre (CT 201). Chanrithy is the award-winning author of the book When Broken Glass Floats: Growing up under the Khmer Rouge. She will share her and family’s struggle when the Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia in 1975. At Cascade, on Tuesday, November 13, and at Rock Creek on Thursday, November 15, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., stop by to see the exhibit, Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War to Oregon, displaying more than 65 pairs of empty combat boots – tagged with the names of Oregon soldiers who have died in the current Iraq War together with a visual display exploring the history, cost, consequences of war and a Wall of Remembrance to memorialize the Iraqis killed in the conflict.. This exhibit is sponsored by ASPCC RC & CA and the Multicultural Programs at Rock Creek. For more information, feel free to contact me at (503) 614-7117 or mlemos@pcc.edu.
