Jewish peace wing bet heavily on Merkley

Posted by Jeff Mapes, The Oregonian February 05, 2009 09:09AM

The J Street PAC, a new organization coming out of the Israeli peace wing, is crowing about its biggest win in the November elections: Oregon Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley.

The group, which raised more than $565,000 for congressional candidates in the last election, gave more to Merkley - some $93,000 - than for any other candidate.

J Street was formed last year primarily by some liberal American Jews in hopes of countering what they saw as the overly hawkish views of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee. Merkley's rival, then-Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., was a favorite of AIPAC supporters and had strongly supported Israel's military policies.

Merkley had expressed his strong support for Israel during the campaign. In fact, the one time the Mideast issue surfaced during the Senate race was back during primary when some pro-Palestinian activists in the Portland area charged that Merkley had appeared to change his views to curry favor with Jewish supporters of Israel. Merkley denied the charge and it looks as if it didn't hurt his ability to attract support from J Street

What polls demonstrate that a majority of Palestinians support a peace agreement with Israel (point #3)?

In a poll of Palestinians released on January 30th by the Near East Consulting Institute,
73% of all surveyed believe that Hamas should "change its position on the elimination of
the state of Israel" and 84% support a peace agreement with Israel, a sentiment echoed
by 77% of those respondents who voted for Hamas.

According to Palestinian pollster Khalil Shikaki, "three quarters of all Palestinians, including
more than 60 percent of Hamas supporters, are willing to support reconciliation between
Palestinians and Israelis based on a two-state solution. During the last 10 years, the trend
among the Palestinians has been to move away from hard-line attitudes and to embrace
moderate ones. Indeed, more than 60 percent of Hamas voters support an immediate return
    to negotiations with Israel."
