Jobs with Justice Action Alert

National Jobs with Justice Week of Action
December 10th, International Human Rights Day

The Workers are "Key", Not the Banks!  No Bailouts for Union-Busting Banks!
Rally at the Bank!   Wed. December 10, 4:30pm
Key Bank, 726 SE Morrison St
Join Jobs with Justice for a week of action calling for a "People's Bailout" that fixes the real economy, restores a voice for working people in challenging corporate greed, provides emergency help to the victims of the crisis and begins building a fair economy that works for all, addressing crises in housing, health care, jobs, retirement security and the environment.

Key Bank was approved for $2.5 billion as part of the national bailout.   instead of using the money to give relief to those hardest hit in the current economy, Key Bank is misusing their bailout money to buy other banks and underwrite Oak Harbor Freight Lines, a company that has violated workers' rights by coercing and intimidating striking workers, discriminating against minorities and women and cutting off health care
for retired employees.

It's the People's Bailout Week of Action!

As many predicted, the Wall Street Bailout has proven to be the gross give-away to the same financial bigwigs that have been pocketing millions while wrecking the real economy.  Little or no benefit has gone to the working people and the real economy, at a time that we face the greatest economic crisis since the 1930s.  By the time Obama is sworn in, hundreds of thousands of additional people will lose their jobs, lose their homes and lose their health care.

Tell Congress: We Demand a People’s Bailout

On Friday December 5th, the workers of Republic Windows and Doors, members of UE Local 1110, occupied their factory, which was due to close at 10:00 AM.  Republic Windows and Doors was forced to close after Bank of America, just weeks after taking $25 Billion in bailout money, turned its back on hundreds of workers making energy efficient doors and windows in Chicago by refusing to continue credit to the company.  To make matters even worse than putting 300 people out of work, Bank of America has instructed Republic to refuse to pay workers compensation they are legally entitled to, either earned vacation pay or the severance pay legally required under the WARN Act, in lieu of proper notice of plant closing.  Today is Day 4 of the occupation.  You can read more about the struggle in the NY Times and on the UE website.

Subject: Support a People's Bailout

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

As many predicted, the Wall Street Bailout has proven to be a give-away to the same financial bigwigs that have been pocketing millions while wrecking the real economy. Little or no benefit has gone to the working people and the real economy, at a time that we face the greatest economic crisis since the 1930s.

The situation at Republic Windows and Doors, where workers are sitting-in to demand the pay they are due under the law after Bank of America witheld credit and forced the company to close suddenly, is just one example of how the Wall Street bailout money is doing nothing to help working people.

It's time for a "People's Bailout" that fixes the real economy, restores a voice for working people in challenging corporate greed, provides emergency help to the victims of the crisis and begins building a fair economy that works for all.

I ask you to immediately work to:

- Pass a large economic stimulus/recovery package, on the scale of the emergency we face;
- Pass the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA);
- Stop evictions due to foreclosures;
- Take emergency action so people losing jobs don't lose health care.
- Lay the groundwork for a long-term recovery program including: Green jobs and clean energy; Restore worker justice, including EFCA and other reforms; Health care for all; Retirement security; Re-regulate the finance system and make the speculators pay to clean-up their mess; Fair policies on Trade and Migration, including renegotiating NAFTA and other trade agreements, to protect worker rights and the environment, ending ICE raids and supporting the rights of all workers, here and abroad.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Save Autoworker Jobs!

Your urgent help is needed to help save the millions of jobs that are connected to America's auto industry. Allowing America's auto industry to fall into bankruptcy punishes workers and retirees for past management misjudgments, and would be a disaster for the country – especially in this deepening economic crisis.

Congressional leaders have said they will consider emergency assistance to the domestic auto industry.  But a new vote will be required, and we must continue to build support to save jobs.

From Nov. 24 through Dec. 7, most lawmakers are back in their home states or districts, meeting with constituents. The following week, December 7-13, groups across the country are mobilizing for a "People’s Bailout" (http://www.jwj.org/bailout) including an economic stimulus package, restoration of the middle class through collective bargaining, ending foreclosures and other measures to address the economic crisis.

The American auto industry has been central to building America’s middle class. Preventing its collapse, and investing in its reform, should be an important part of a broader economic recovery program.

Congress needs to hear from all of us – now.

Without immediate government aid, one or more automakers could fail, costing millions of jobs, putting thousands of small and medium-sized businesses at risk, threatening health and pension benefits for retirees, and causing enormous damage to our economy.

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

The workers, retirees and small businesses that depend on America's auto industry need your help right away.

GM, Ford and Chrysler need an immediate $25 billion bridge loan to help them weather the current severe credit and economic crises. Without this assistance, these companies will run out of cash and be forced to cease all manufacturing and business operations. Allowing these companies to collapse would be an economic disaster.

Congress bailed out Wall Street - it's time to put people first and focus on the Main Street economy, including investing in manufacturing jobs while encouraging a long-term plan for a revitalized and sustainable American auto industry.

I urge you to vote for this greatly needed assistance.

Thank you for considering my views on this critically important issue.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

VOTE NOW FOR GRINCH OF THE YEAR!

These are critical times for the labor movement, for our economy, and for the working class.  The worst economic crisis of a generation, the Wall Street bail-out, and the tightening squeeze on working people make the efforts of Jobs with Justice activists more important than ever.

As President-elect Obama said in his speech last night, "This victory alone is not the change we seek -- it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you."

Now is the time to organize!  In the coming months, we have a real opportunity to create positive change for working people in this country.

JwJ activists understand that the shift of power from workers to corporations is one of the central causes of the economic meltdown and the crisis we're facing.  The assault on organized labor and declining union membership helped corporations redistribute income upwards, with wealth more concentrated in the hands of the super-rich than at any time since the 1920s.

Passage of the Employee Free Choice Act would go a long way towards repairing the damage done by the many years of policies that favor corporations over working people.  Sign on now.

We have the chance of our lifetime to change the rules of the game.  The Employee Free Choice Act will make it easier for women and men to form or join a union when they choose to in their workplace. This legislation would give workers a fair and direct path to form unions through majority sign-up, help employees secure a contract with their employer in a reasonable period of time, and toughen penalties against employers who violate their workers' rights.  With a free choice to join unions, working people can bargain for better pay, health care and pensions and build a better life themselves and their families.

In the coming months, we can win the Employee Free Choice Act and set the stage for moving a real people's economic agenda!  Now is our time!

We know that the road to a real economic recovery is the same path JwJ has been traveling for 20 years; a path paved with the right of workers to organize, aggressive democratic unionism, health care for all, retirement security, and government policies that protect working families by reigning in banks and corporations.

A Community Dialogue on Trade, Migration and Job Loss
December 8, 2008 from
6:00-9:00

Includes dinner    Location TBA

Jobs with Justice has initiated a community dialogue on trade migration and job loss and invites unions and labor groups to co-sponsor this event. We would ask co-sponsors to help with or consult on the planning of the event, to help with turn out 5 to 10 people, and to contribute $50 to help cover the cost of the dinner. The planning has just begun and includes people from the Longshore union, The Laborers, the Carpenters, the Teamsters, the Machinists, Voz, the American Friends Service Committee, Center for Inter Cultural Organizing, CAUSA, PCUN, Rural Organizing Project, the Portland Central American Solidarity Committee and Portland Jobs with Justice. Many others have expressed interest.

The purpose of this forum is to hear workers' stories and share your own experience and ideas. Through conversations we will explore topics such as: the race to the bottom, job outsourcing, job loss and immigration.

In this forum we will hear from workers from both sides of the border whose jobs and livelihoods have been affected by trade. We will hear from workers in this country who have seen their employers undercut wages and benefits by hiring workers that can be exploited as cheap labor. We will also hear from immigrant workers about the working conditions they face once they come to this country and how they are exploited by their employer.

These issues affect all workers and our ability to fight for our rights in the work place and our ability to re-build the broken economy. We invite you to join us as we listen to each other and share ideas on possible directions for change.

Please join us in this discussion by signing on as a co-sponsor today. For questions email to eliana@jwjpdx.org or call 503-236-5573
