MESD Candlelight Vigil for Fairness This Monday, AFSCME Local 1995 members began week two of their strike against Multnomah Education Services District (MESD) over affordable health insurance and respect at work. MESD educators work with special needs students in Portland area schools. The average salary for these folks is $26,000 a year and many employees pay as much as 40 percent of their income on health insurance costs. The Superintendent of MESD makes $145,000 a year and pays only 2 percent towards his health insurance costs. Management is stalling negotiations in an effort to force employees to choose between losing health coverage or crossing the picket line. MESD officials abruptly walked out of Sunday's mediation session and claimed today that they intend to hire permanent replacements for striking workers. You can help! This Wednesday, please join us at 5:30pm for a rally and candlelight vigil to support the striking MESD workers and their families. There will be a "giving tree" where supporters in the community and from other unions can sign up to "adopt an MESD family" for the holidays and help provide holiday gifts for children who would otherwise go without this year due to the strike. Candlelight Vigil for Fairness Wednesday, December 12th 5:30pm at the MESD Ainsworth Building 11611 NE Ainsworth Circle Meanwhile, please spread this far and wide & be sure to check out the new video on YouTube about the striking MESD workers and the special message they delivered to management last week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH-a7Nf5nAY Click here to comment Here to blog Or here to discuss |
