Greetings colleagues and friends The Multicultural Center invites you to attend the following presentation Wednesday, February 28 1:00p.m.-2:00p.m. TCB Rm 212 Race and Immigration: Making the Link Guest Speaker: Kayse Jama, Director, Center for Intercultural Organizing Kayse Jama is Trainer/Organizer at Western States Center, he joined in June 2005 under a New Voices Fellowship. Born into a nomad family in Northern Somalia, Kayse left when the civil war erupted, and finally found sanctuary in Portland. After becoming a social worker, he left the social services arena compelled by the attacks against immigrants and refugees post 9/11. Kayse eventually founded the Center for Intercultural Organizing to bring cross-cultural solidarity to the struggle for political, social and economic justice. He is a Leadership Fellow and an adjunct instructor for University Studies at Portland State University. The Center for Intercultural Organizing was originally established to combat widespread anti-Muslim sentiment after 9/11/2001. On September 8, 2002, authorities arrested a well-known Portland Imam at the airportSheik Mohamed Abdirahman Kariye, spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Portlandfalsely claiming his brother's luggage contained traces of TNT. The Centers founders organized a multicultural march and protest outside the federal building in downtown Portland, attended by local Muslims and other activists. Since then, the Center for Intercultural Organizing has maintained the struggle against Islamophobia, while broadening its organizing toward building a multi-racial, multicultural movement for immigrant and refugee rights. http://www.interculturalorganizing.org/index.html The event is made possible by generous support from the Sociology department and the Multicultural Center.
