The president has gone too far with his proposal, and even prominent Republicans – individuals highly respected within the president’s party – are objecting strenuously. This chorus includes Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. John Warner (R-VA), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and General Colin Powell, who wrote in a letter to Sen. McCain, “the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism.”
Along with many lawmakers of both parties, these senators realize that we are a nation of laws and any legislation that shows a disregard for human rights and our own constitutional principles would call into question the very character of our nation.
Now is the time to drive home to all our elected officials the fact that patriotism goes hand-in-hand with the Constitution and the Rule of Law.
