—Thomas Jefferson, The Declaration of Independence
Endgame for the Constitution
WNY Media Network, NY -
... All of these violations of law and the Constitution are serious impeachable offenses. Yet. Congress is supine as the Bush regime exercises dictatorial powers. ... Searching the Congressman's Office The court-authorized search of the Congressional office of Representative William Jefferson by federal agents was as unprecedented in the history of Congress as it was alarming.
The
Bush administration’s steady garroting of American liberties – already
strangling the right to a fair trial and protections against warrantless
searches – is now tightening its chokehold around the First Amendment’s
guarantee of a free press and respect for Congress as a co-equal branch
of government. As Bush said after a meeting with the four top congressional leaders on Dec. 18, 2000, “I told all four that there were going to be some times where we don’t agree with each other. But that’s OK. If this were a dictatorship, it’d be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I’m the dictator.” If Bush’s theories of unlimited presidential power are carried much further, his dictatorship comment might end up looking less like a joke and more like evidence of premeditation. There will be little left of traditional American democracy, beyond perhaps periodic elections in which a thoroughly deceived or uninformed electorate traipses to the polls and pushes buttons on electronic voting machines that may or may not record the votes.
"I clearly have serious concerns about what happened," Mr.
Boehner said, "and whether the people at the Justice Department have
looked at the Constitution."
