On Conflating Religion and Politics
The Real Problem with Rovian Spin...

The absence of questions does not make a democracy function; democratic processes do.  It has been a long time since this country has paid a price for liberty. It seems clear now that a large payment of vigilance is long overdue.
Steve Freeman

When a so-called philanthropy expert: makes the claim that "Conservatives Are More Generous..."  http://www.beliefnet.com/story/204/story_20419_1.html

...It helps to cut through the hype...

To quote Barry Goldwater :
"I don't have any respect for the Religious Right."
"Every good Christian should line up and kick Jerry Falwell's ass."
"The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others."

Mr. Brooks, by his own admission, did a bit of cherry-picking..
{To make his point forcefully, Brooks admits he cut out a lot of qualifying information. }

That "religious conservatives donate far more money than secular liberals," in no way justifies the misleading Rovian spinline...

A false comparison of apples (religious) and oranges (secular), without examining the peaches (conservatives) and pears (liberals) labels... is a fruit salad of logical fallacy.

The interrelationships between these four variables: religious, liberal, conservative, and secular... are subject to differing perceptions, definitions, and connotations which further  contaminate any "conclusions" one might wish to pretend can be justified ...

What Mr. Brooks left out, is that "religious conservatives donate a much smaller proportion of their money than religious liberals." Since this statistic contradicts his thesis, he conveniently left it out...

Also... "Both liberals and religious conservatives were more likely to donate money to the Tsunami victims than were the secular conservatives."  Another statistic Mr. Brooks conveniently forgot.

Transparent logical fallacy...  The first resort of those who cannot support an argument.

A more cogent point: The current administration is not at all "conservative" to begin with. This is why they lost...

Real conservatives and real liberals care about America. This is not a partisan issue... Pigeonholing and labeling our neighbors will not help us find solutions. We have seen enough mud-slinging, misrepresentation, and spinning... It is time to find common ground, clean up the mess, demand accountability, and work together for a better tomorrow.

But the extremists in the White house still don't get it.
