Suzanne Scheans (sue-zan sheens) is a Journeyman Steamfitter with The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada, UA Local 290, Portland Oregon.

 

A longtime resident of the Portland –Vancouver Metro Area, Suzanne’s non-traditional career path started in the late 70 at Beaverton High School, she was the first female student in the Power Mechanics Cluster, she continued here non-traditional career by enlisting into the US Navy at a time when it was 1.3% female.  Suzanne is a graduate of the BFIT, ( Building Future in Industry and Trades ) and through many years of night school has also earned a degree in Business Management. 

 

An active member of her Union, she is the Chairwoman of its Political Action Committee as well as an appointed delegate to the Clark, Skamania and Klickitat Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO and serves on their Executive Board.

 

Suzanne is the Current Chairwoman of the Board for Oregon Tradeswomen, a local Non-profit which is highly successful in promoting women in the trades with Education, Leadership and Mentorship.

Format: 

 

v     Each show will have a general topic, relevant to current events for Union building trades and or Gender in the Building Trades.

 

v     Hosts may invite guest speaker(s) with an emphasis on Tradeswomen and their supporters.

 

v     Call in questions from listeners will be encouraged.

 

v     A portion of the show will be devoted to resources for Tradeswomen.  Share information such as program name, contact information.

 

v     Wrap up of the show will be announcements for upcoming tradeswomen events.

OTI workshop area staffed with other Tradeswomen members of Local 290, hands-on project using tools to make a PVC pipe bracelet

 

Organizer / Presenter – Jr. High Girls Gender Equity Conference, PAVTEC – May 2006

Workshop presenter – Fluids, Flows and Control of Energies. Students disassembled and assembled various valves; each student gave a different example of different valves in the home.  Each example was discussed outlining operation and safety.
