 "We do not have to visit a madhouse to find disordered minds;
        our planet is the mental institution of the universe."
Johan Wolfgang von Goethe
Kitty Hart The democratic countries didn't want to listen.  They must listen now.  Those of us who survived have a duty to those who died. They are not here to speak: we must speak for them... It is important to combat the monthly propaganda of lies which could lead to another war of Nazism in Europe and even in America. Another Holocaust. And just as doubters sneer in indifference, the indifference of civilized countries before the war, during the war, and now. ....It could have happened anywhere. It still can happen anywhere if the conditions are right.

 Flannery O'Connor
"Everywhere I go, I'm asked if I think the universities stifle writers. My opinion is that they don't
 stifle enough of them. There's many a best seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher."
(1925-1964)
From MoorishGirl Stranger in a Strange Land: Encounters in the Disunited States CoverThe Guardian has an excerpt from Gary Younge's forthcoming book, Stranger in a Strange Land that's very much worth a read. The book chronicles his arrival in America a couple of years after 9/11, and the work he did covering American political life. Right-wing conservatives, he writes, "badgered me as though their own reference points represented the sole prism through which global events could possibly be understood. As if the struggle for moral superiority between Europe and the US could have any relevance to someone whose ancestors were brought to the Americas as slaves and whose parents and grandparents lived through the war under European colonization. 'If it wasn't for us, you would be speaking German,' they would say. 'No, if it wasn't for you,' I would tell them, 'I would probably be speaking Yoruba.'"

Books on the Bush Administration
"In recent months a floodlet of books has been published about President Bush, his administration and the war in Iraq. They range widely in perspective," wrote Michiko Kakutani this week. "Yet taken together with earlier volumes, these books create a cumulative and, in many respects, surprisingly coherent portrait of the Bush White House and its management style."

How Would a Patriot Act? Cover by Glenn Greenwald

Publisher Comments
Glenn Greenwald was not a political man. Not liberal, not conservative. Politicians were all the same and it didn't matter which party was in power. Extremists on both ends canceled each other out, and the United States would essentially remain forever... (read more)
