"Bompa," my grandpa Flanagan,  smoked Pall Mall non-filters, until the day he died too soon.
 The tobacco industry, knowing better,
advertised the "health benefits" of smoking.
The current rash of denials about the dangers of tobacco is deplorable.
It would have been nice to have known him better...

My Grandpa Wilson did not smoke.  He played golf until he was in his eighties.
Lived independently until the ripe old age of 94.  He met his great-grandchildren and
they understood where they came from.  We wrote letters regularly and shared stories,
small wisdom, memories, and laughter which still travels with me... A precious gift.

Smoking cigarettes is not healthy.  The prognosis is death too soon.

That smoking cigarettes kills people is not subject to debate.
That second hand smoke also kills, has been proven beyond
the shadow of any doubt.  What kind of reckless fool would
defend the act of contaminating your children's lungs or
shortening the lives of your parents by exposing them to
toxins... Responsible smokers do not pollute the air their family
must breathe.  They have a "smoking porch," go for walks, sit
down by the river, go fishing, take a hike, work in the garden, or
play golf.  There is no crime in smoking.  But it is the height
of irresponsibility to subject others to your chosen poison.

Abject ignorance is certainly a reason, but it's no excuse.
