Neighbors throng to movie showing
A large crowd lined up to see the film "Is Wal-Mart Good for America" at the Moreland Theater on September 22nd. The film, originally aired by PBS, explained the disastrous effects of Wal-Mart on local economies, jobs, and fair competition. NASAW sponsored the showing to educate the neighborhood on the consequences of a Wal-Mart development, proposed for the old Goodwill site on Tacoma and McLoughlin.

Movie goers expressed support for the continued fight to keep Wal-Mart from Sellwood/Ardenwald.

More than 200 people attended the showing. NASAW volunteers distributed an informative brochure and fielded questions from passers-by and the media.

NASAW needs YOU!
Do you enjoy walking to shops and the park? Do you like meeting your friends for coffee or a meal at one of our coffee shops or restaurants? Are you opposed to a bad neighbor like Wal-Mart locating in our neighborhood? Do you want to save a great neighborhood and a thriving business community? Then you are a great candidate to serve as a NASAW volunteer.

A neighborhood campaign such as this one relies on the efforts of volunteers to keep up the daily business of activities, staffing events, doing data entry, and filling leadership roles. NASAW has opportunities for you to make a big difference by donating your time, energy, and expertise.

Join the NASAW steering committee. The steering committee meets twice monthly to coordinate the activities of the campaign, such as planning for events, getting updates on developer activities, and strategic planning. Volunteer to fill a steering committee spot:

Community Outreach/Merchant Relations Recruit and organize volunteers for events. Get the word out by distributing flyers, carrying signs, and canvassing neighborhoods to make residents aware of the proposed development.
Web liaison Help enter names into our data base so we can keep neighbors involved and up to date. The database is the email list we use to distribute this newsletter.
